Job Description:
Registered Nurse – Telemetry
This position will be floating to ED admit and may be required to float to other units as needed.  The ER admit patient ratios for admitted patients is ideally 6:1. The tele ratios are usually 1:5 or 1:6.  RN must be willing and able to treat and manage patients on unit with a variety of conditions (including but not limited to flu, Covid, heart issues, lung issues, etc).
Telemetry is a mixture of registered nurse duties and technical skills to operate machinery that monitors patient health—the most common being the echocardiogram (EKG). You will need the same bedside manner as a Registered Nurse working in Long-term Care, Emergency Room, Med Surg and such, as well as the technical know-how to run stress tests and read EKG strips in order to properly care for patients.  You will provide care and treatment to ill, injured, and recovering adults. The telemetry nurse must be able to assess patient condition, administer medications, change dressings, monitor vital signs, keep records, provide patients with support and education.  Reading an EKG is one of the primary functions that distinguishes telemetry nurses.  Other equipment that is used in the telemetry unit includes heart monitors and Holter monitors. Each of these plays an important role in determining the overall health of the patient and experience in each is required for this position.  Because of the amount of equipment strapped to your cardiac patients, there are many factors determining the health of the patient. Reacting to these irregularities in an urgent manner is needed to protect the patient, and often waiting for a physician to respond takes too long.  Telemetry nurses also have to be ready if the patient's vital signs trigger any alarms. False alarms are standard in telemetry, and each one has to be treated equally.
  • The Registered Nurse is responsible for evaluating patients and assisting physicians with patient care. Plans, implements, and documents nursing care based on patient's needs.
  •  Identifies patient needs and determines priorities for care through assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation.
  • Develops, implements and coordinates individualized plan of care for patients assigned through initial and on-going assessments.
  • Initiates assessment based on the patient's problems or needs, the physician's medical diagnosis, and the functional health framework.
  • Performs therapeutic nursing interventions. Manages care of patients.
  • Documents care based on standards of care and practice, patient acuity, and/or clinical priorities.
  • Advocates for evidence-based practice care standards and supports adoption of evidence-based practices and innovations in care delivery.
  • Provides patient centric care in alignment with professional nursing practice model.
  • Document all changes in patient condition and behavior.
  • Preform lab work.
  • Assist the Physicians in customized treatment plans for each patient.
  • Carry out treatment plans and administer medications needed.
  • Preform Emergency treatment.
  • Educate patients on diagnoses and tests.
  • Provide accurate and timely updates to family.
  • Provide a hygienic Environment.
  • Maintain physical exercise and proper diet.
  • Be prepared to monitor and react to alarms that will go off.
  • Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse.
  • Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients and interprets and records electronic displays.
  • Initiates corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptomatology.
  • Prepares equipment and aids physician during examination and treatment of patient.
  • Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol.
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
  • Other duties as may be assigned, as this is a brief review and is not limited to the above.
