Job Description:
Registered Nurse – Emergency Room/Department
Our Emergency Department (ED) RNs must be ready to care for patients when they need us most. In addition to providing specialized and innovative services, we need our ED RNs to be equipped to handle an array of emergency situations for patients of all ages. Our Emergency Department (ED) nurses are trained in dealing with a variety of trauma situations requiring quick and decisive actions. Ideal prospective ED RNs must be able to quickly and accurately assess incoming patients with both physical and mental health conditions and be able to prioritize their injuries and medical needs accordingly.  Under general supervision, demonstrates ability to handle nursing problems and, in general, an expanded group of nursing practices. Performs nursing intervention across a variety of nursing situations. Identifies patient problems prior to explicit changes in patient-specific data collection (such as vital signs).  Must float as needed. 
You will provide care and treatment to ill, injured, and recovering adults.
Below are some of the job duties the emergency room nurse will be responsible for, but are not limited to the following: 
  • Triage/assess patient conditions and level of injury or illness.
  • Immediately stabilize incoming patients.
  • Administer medications as instructed by Physicians.
  • Start Intravenous lines.
  • Set broke bones, under physicians watch. 
  • Perform tracheotomies and incubations.
  • Give patients stitches and sutures.
  • Create and maintain incoming patient records.
  • Work with a team of emergency staff to help patients.
  • Assist with transferring stable patients to other floors. 
  • Change dressings/monitor vital signs.
  • Provide patients with support and education.
  • Has experience with IV Insertion and Phlebotomy Conscious Sedation. 
  • The Registered Nurse is responsible for evaluating patients and assisting physicians with patient care. Plans, implements, and documents nursing care based on patient's needs.
  •  Identifies patient needs and determines priorities for care through assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation.
  • Develops, implements, and coordinates individualized plan of care for patients assigned through initial and on-going assessments.
  • Initiates assessment based on the patient's problems or needs, the physician's medical diagnosis, and the functional health framework.
  • Performs therapeutic nursing interventions. Manages care of patients.
  • Documents care based on standards of care and practice, patient acuity, and/or clinical priorities.
  • Advocates for evidence-based practice care standards and supports adoption of evidence-based practices and innovations in care delivery.
  • Provides patient centric care in alignment with professional nursing practice model.
  • Document all changes in patient condition and behavior. 
  • Preform lab work.
  • Assist the Physicians in customized treatment plans for each patient.
  • Carry out treatment plans and administer medications needed.
  • Preform Emergency treatment.
  • Educate patients on diagnoses and tests.
  • Provide accurate and timely updates to family.
  • Provide a hygienic Environment.
  • Maintain physical exercise and proper diet. 
  • Be prepared to monitor and react to alarms that will go off.
  • Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse.
  • Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients and interprets and records electronic displays.
  • Initiates corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptomatology.
  • Prepares equipment and aids physician during examination and treatment of patient.
  • Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol.
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
  • Other duties as may be assigned, as this is a brief review and is not limited to the above.
ASN required, BSN preferred.
Registered Nurse in New York State
1 year of current Emergency Room experience, in a level 1-2 Trauma Center. 
Must have ICU experience at the bedside within the past six months.
BLS, ACLS, NIHSS = Required
TCAR for Surgery
Phlebotomy Conscious Sedation Certification - Preferred
IV Insertion Preferred.
Must demonstrated level of performance and practice is required.
Willingness to be flexible for different hours.
Clinical knowledge and analytical abilities necessary to formulate effective nursing care plans.
Ability to perform a wide variety of professional nursing services.
Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, and hospital personnel.
Must have strong experience working with trauma patients, stroke patients and Sepsis Patients.
While the facility tries to keep ratios at a normal level (1:4-1:5) candidates must be comfortable working in a position where the acuity can reach 1:8 - 1:10. The ED at HUMC is a large academic Level II Trauma center. The unit is very fast paced and manages complex patients.

Contract:                          13 weeks
Shifts Available:             12-hour days and nights.
