Duties:

Job Summary: The Phlebotomist is responsible for the proper collection of all specimen types on patients of all ages and in all states of health using proven techniques and appropriate collection devices to ensure safe and adequate collection. Essential Generic Job Functions (List in order of importance): 1. Collects intravenous and/or capillary blood from newborn through geriatric aged patients using proper aseptic collection techniques. 2. Draws intravenous and capillary blood into proper tubes and culture vials according to the purpose for which the specimen is to be tested. 3. Performs blood drawing procedures. 4. Demonstrates high success rate (***%) on first venipuncture, and performs no more than two venipunctures per patient. 5. Maintains work area with proper level of supplies. 6. Logs refrigerator temperature daily, and informs section head if temperatures fall outside of optimal range. 7. Keeps a log on all patient activity and sends daily to Outreach Section Head. 8. Obtains all necessary information required for a patient test to be performed and billed properly. 9. Travels and performs phlebotomy duties at off-site locations for corporate and municipal health fairs, and delivers specimens to the laboratory as needed. 10. Travels and performs phlebotomy duties to house calls as needed and delivers specimens to laboratory as needed. 11. Lifts a minimum of 10 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 150 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day. Essential Generic Job Functions (Continued): 12. Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.). 13. Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.

Skills:

Required:
Must have a minimum of 2 years prior experience as a Certified Phlebotomist
Must have prior experience performing venipunctures in a fast paced lab or hospital setting
Must have exeprience with patients of all ages.
Must have experience:
Performing doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc
Demonstrate technique/s using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
Properly explaining in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) and or other specimen collection (ex. urine or fecal) as required
Documenting/computer literacy

High school diploma or equivalent.  Completion of an accredited Phlebotomy program. Valid NJ Phlebotomy Certification
