Grounds and Labor Shop Manager



The Department of Facilities Services is responsible for the efficient and costeffective operations maintenance and management of all grounds and facilities consisting of approximately 5 million square feet of space on three campuses SomervilleMedford Grafton and Boston



A broad range of services are provided to support the University campuses including facility maintenance by all trades capital maintenance custodial servicesenergy and utilities systems recycling and waste management event services residential facilities coordination and grounds maintenance



Related functions which require close coordination with this department are public and environmental safety and security campus planning and design and construction of capital and deferred maintenance projects including major repairs renovation and new construction




Job Summary




Facilities Services department is seeking a Grounds and Labor Shop Manager who will report to the Director Facilities Campus Services The position will be responsible for planning scheduling implementing and reporting on the design care and maintenance programs for the diverse campus grounds including the athletic natural and synthetic playing fields While maintaining safety as a priority for employees and the campus community Key accountabilities include supervising a staff of 15+ employees supported by contract services Experience with cost estimating extensive scheduling and managing multitrade projects and working with subcontractors inspecting and evaluating inprogress and completed work for compliance The position is responsible for 165+ acres of soft and hardscape which includes lawns and various parking lots walks and drives turf surfaces including natural and synthetic surfaces and athletic fields trees of varied species and a large amount of shrubs and perennial beds




Essential Functions








Working collaboratively with University stakeholders external constituents and the campus community





Develops and schedules plans for grounds maintenance and renovation which include the steps necessary for seasonal and routine work and special projects





Establishes and schedules grounds crew work assignments including vacation scheduling for full time employees leaves of absence and the oversight of personnel management and general duties





Performs daily oncampus written inspections and evaluate completed work and work in progress for compliance with safety quality and service levels





Manage winter and inclement weather services including and not limited to snow plowing and snow removal operations shoveling and the sanding and salting of walks drives and parking lots the oversight and planning of contract services required for winter storm operations





Capable of providing onsite campus management during inclement and severe weather conditions which may include overnight situations weekends and holidays





Provide support for the solid wasterecyclingfood waste collection programs








Minimum Required Experience Education Background And CertificationsLicenses





Knowledge and skills as typically acquired through a completion of an Associates degree in horticulture science landscape management landscape design or similar discipline andor education or equivalent experience as a facilities manager
Two+ 2 years supervisory experience in commercial or municipal grounds care and maintenance
A proven record of providing leadership for a grounds or similar organization of 3+ employees
A proven record of excellent communication and interpersonal skills within an organization of 3+ employees
Proven ability to work in a fast paced and teamspirited environment
Demonstrated proficiency in teamwork problem solving and diplomacy
Ability to obtain and maintain all local state and federal licenses and certifications as required to conduct the responsibilities of the position
Valid drivers license
